7 Days in Austria: Ski and City Sights

Nestled in the heart of Europe, Austria beckons travelers with its alpine beauty and rich cultural heritage. For skiing enthusiasts and history buffs alike, a visit to Austria promises an unforgettable experience. Two destinations that capture the essence of Austrian charm are Kitzbühel for skiing and Salzburg for its cultural splendor.

Skiing Adventure at Kitz Ski

Kitzbühel, home to the famous Kitz Ski resort, is a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. Located in the Tyrolean Alps, this quaint town transforms into a bustling hub during ski season. With over 230 kilometers of pristine slopes catering to all skill levels, Kitzbühel offers something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned skiers.

Imagine gliding down impeccably groomed slopes, surrounded by majestic mountain vistas. The Hahnenkamm downhill race, one of the most challenging ski races worldwide, adds to the resort's allure. Beyond skiing, Kitzbühel's charming town center boasts cozy cafes, traditional Austrian restaurants, and luxury boutiques, making après-ski just as delightful as hitting the slopes.

Where To Stay 

My favorite part of this Tyrolean town is how close all the hotels and restaurants are to the main ski lift. In the heart of the city center is The Reisch Hotel. It is perfect for an avid skier. When you are done with your long day of exploring the slopes it is a short walk back. Once you arrive back the hotel has a private storage area to keep all your gear and come back. You can put boots and gloves on the dryers and the next morning you will come back to warm accessories. 

Cultural Exploration in Salzburg

After an exhilarating few days on the slopes, a trip to Salzburg provides a perfect contrast with its rich cultural heritage and baroque architecture. Birthplace of Mozart and backdrop for "The Sound of Music," Salzburg is a city steeped in history and artistic legacy. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow streets and grand squares, showcasing architectural gems like Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mirabell Palace.

Immerse yourself in the city's musical legacy with a visit to Mozart's birthplace and enjoy classical performances at renowned venues like the Salzburg Festival. Stroll along the banks of the Salzach River or indulge in traditional Austrian cuisine at cozy taverns. Don't miss the opportunity to sample Salzburg's famous Mozartkugel chocolates, a delightful souvenir from this cultural gem, we brought home a few boxes for our family and they loved them! 

Salzburg is one of my favorite cities because of the food and drink culture. Head to the Hotel Scher Salzburg and sit outside at Cafe Sacher, the birth place of the original Sacher-Torte. The Sacher-Torte is a layered chocolate cake that will indulge your wildest chocolate dreams. Enjoy the river views and grab a coffee while eating a slice of history. 

On my last visit we stumbled upon the old Jewish quarter. In here we sat a beer garden for a few hours enjoying lunch and a few radlers. Radlers are a mix of local pilsner and homemade lemonade and became my new favorite summer drink. Better than an aperol spritz you ask? I say yes. 

Where to Stay

I recommend staying on the south side of the river to be walking distance from most of the historic areas. We loved our stay at Altstadthotel Wolf - Salzburg. A fourth general family run boutique hotel in the heart of the city. Our stay included breakfast every morning and our room was a beautiful mix of history and upgraded luxuries.  

Planning Your Visit

When planning your Austrian adventure, consider visiting Kitz Ski from late November to early April for the best skiing conditions. Salzburg, on the other hand, is a year-round destination with each season offering its unique charm. The summer months are ideal for exploring the surrounding lakes and mountains, while winter transforms the city into a winter wonderland. We went in March and found it to the best of both worlds. 

Both Kitzbühel and Salzburg are easily accessible by train or car from major cities like Vienna and Munich, making them perfect additions to any European itinerary. Whether you're seeking thrilling slopes or cultural immersion, Austria's blend of natural beauty and rich heritage promises an unforgettable journey.
